Debriefing for Interview 4 The primary culture-centered skills used by the counselor were “Articulate the problem from the client’s cultural perspective “ and finding common ground between the culture of the client and counselor through focusing on family. The counselor felt helped by hearing the pro and anti toward staying on target during the interview. Some key points in the interview were T16 where the counselor brought up sources of resistance based on cultural differences. In T21 the counselor articulated the family’s rule in defining the problem. In T25 the counselor identified feelings which may have contributed to resistance. In T29 and T44 the counselor identified the problem from the client’s cultural perspective. The counselor indicated that a pro and anti made it easier to pick up feelings during the interview. The client felt more at ease as the counselor focused on family. The client would have liked more explicit attention given to culture but family provided the important foundation of common ground. The anticounselor emphasized differences even though family was important to both the counselor and the client. The procounselor tried to help the client be receptive toward the counselor in spite of culture and gender differences by building on the common ground. Key words were: Guy,
