Debriefing for Interview 3 The most obvious culture-centered skills displayed were “Articulate the problem from the client’s cultural perspective” and “Recognize resistance in specific rather than general terms. The counselor frequently used words and phrases introduced by the pro and anti while acknowledging the cultural differences between the counselor and client and accepting her possible misunderstanding of the situation as a white female counselor. The counselor was able to maintain a “balance” of perspectives throughout the interview. Some key points in the interview were T9 when the counselor defines the problem, C12 where the resistance is made explicit. C28 where the client demonstrates increased awareness of the problem and T40 and T53 where the resistance is identified in specific terms. The client felt hesitation
at first but became more at ease during the interview because of how the
counselor responded. The procounselor pointed out the differences also but framed those differences in terms of their learning potential for understanding the situation. Key words were: Anxious,
Depressed, Family, Stress, Burdened, Help, Competent, Independent, Conflict,
