Debriefing for Interview 1

The two primary culture-centered skills which were demonstrated in this interview were “Seeing the problem from the Client’s perspective” and “Increasing your ability to be nondefensive.” When the counselor was confronted with the Black stereotype, which she later said was very off-putting, she did not respond defensively but rather included that perspective in her understanding of the client’s perspective. In C13 the client brought up the topic of cultural differences as an explicit topic. In C26 the topic of “saving face” was introduced as a cultural phenomenon. In T48 the counselor demonstrated non-defensive behavior.

The therapist was able to accept feedback from both the anticounselor and the procounselor and even comments: “Listening to both helped me understand and communicate better.” The first several times a counselor uses this training model the temptation is to treat messages from the pro and anti as static and the counselor tries not to listen to either one. Only after three or four role plays with the model is the typical counselor able to sort out make use of the anti and pro messages.
The client felt comfortable bringing up cultural differences and calling attention to the Counselor’s Black identity.

The procounselor was encouraging and supportive building on a sense of community.

The anticounselor focued on differences between the counselor and client
